living on the edge

Sometimes in the summer a
leaf will leave its tree.
Most remain through Autumn
gaining character and announcing colors
hitherto unsaid;
they fall with no remorse
joyously, celebrated, joined.
But often leaves cannot weather
the storm,
be it torrential rainfall or high wind.
Not every leaf is the same,
and some gather along a similar vein--
they will come or go as a group.
The seasons are harsh and each present
trials that challenge the foliage,
even to the point of catastrophe--
the loss of an entire community.
When that happens trunks, branches, twigs,
are mourned throughout the forest;
individual leaves will be singled out
to represent the whole.
But it is hardest for the branch when a leaf
falls in the spring or the summer,
when so many days of sun and growth
are before it.
We cry then, and live on,
or we fall to despair.

Tom this is melancholy but true, I love the allegory and you're a fine writer in anyone's book. I think I'm one of those leaves who's gaining character and announcing colours hitherto unsaid (grey hair notwithstanding!)

grey..yeah. i've been asked a couple times if i want the senior discount because of the grey beard and mustache. What!? i've got a few more seasons of summer left...and so do you B.

We cry then, and live on, or we fall to despair. Not much of a choice, I suppose, but the only one we've got.

Live on.

I wonder on what isn't said here.

i wanted to end it with a fall...of course living is the logical choice--when one can eventually respond to logic

Loved the title for this. How perfect!

I am enjoying seeing a shifting in some of your pieces. I always enjoy what you normally write (which is anything but "normal" ;)), but I like the depth of seeing what else is in you. This was lovely. I have often written about trees myself. (last blog more)

Or in the case of warmer climates there is more of a continuous exit of a few leaves so that there's always a leaf party with new leaves coming and old leaves going...sort of like life...

Oh Tom
this piece is just wonderful...so simply said but perfectly said...simple I don't mean in a belittling way, simple to me is of the essence, succinct and to the very point...without unnecessary embellishment...I am thinking a lot of falling leaves and seasons...thank you for this story within a story and the perfectly suitable accompanying photos...

happy days
