In the Shawnee National Forest,  Southern Illinois.

Cedar. 

this Beech tree was reaching up to the top edge of the rim.

Southern Illinois

In the Shawnee National Forest I found few Beeches, and they were mostly small to medium. 

The real star of the forest was the water carved sandstone and limestone cliffs.
